Earth Workshop - BC Architects

Dec 14, 2023

In December 2023, we participated in a workshop at the atelier of BC Architects in Brussels that opened our eyes to the boundless potential of building with earth. This hands-on experience was a deep dive into a practice that not only connects architecture to nature but also reimagines sustainability through the lens of vernacular traditions.
Experimenting with earth
The workshop focused on learning by doing—a philosophy that allowed us to engage directly with earth as a construction material. Guided by BC Architects, we experimented with different mixtures of earth, varying the moisture content, density, and even incorporating natural elements such as straw to observe their effects. These hands-on modifications revealed the fascinating interplay between material composition and its practical properties, helping us uncover the strengths and limitations of each mixture.
We also had the opportunity to create samples of rammed earth, which involved compacting layers of soil into formworks to produce solid, durable components. This tactile process was both challenging and rewarding, teaching us the importance of precision, patience, and an intuitive understanding of materials. Taking out our rammed earth forms, all with different layers reinforced the notion that building with earth is as much an art as it is a science.

Lessons from the Atlas Mountains
The workshop also included an inspiring lecture on BC Architects’ experience designing a school with rammed earth in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. This project served as a testament to the beauty and practicality of earth construction, especially when it draws from local materials and techniques.
The team shared their journey of working with excavated earth from the construction site, adapting traditional methods to meet modern requirements. They spoke about overcoming challenges. One of the most important takeaways was the emphasis on community collaboration. By involving local craftsmen and utilizing indigenous knowledge, the project not only achieved sustainability but also strengthened the connection between the building and its environment. This approach resonated with us, as it highlighted the importance of blending innovation with tradition to create architecture that is rooted in place.

A vernacular future
This workshop reaffirmed our belief in the importance of sustainable, circular building practices. Earth, often regarded as waste when excavated, can be transformed into a valuable resource with the right approach. By embracing this material, architects and builders can reduce their environmental impact and create structures that are not only sustainable but also deeply harmonious with their surroundings.
More importantly, the experience reinforced our commitment to sticking to vernacular principles. We were reminded of the wealth of wisdom embedded in traditional building techniques and the need to honor these practices as we innovate. Incorporating local materials, respecting the environment, and engaging the community are not just sustainable strategies- they are essential steps toward creating meaningful and resilient architecture.
Our time with BC Architects has left us inspired, informed, and eager to carry these lessons forward. As we continue our journey into earth construction, we hope to further explore its potential and contribute to a future where architecture is both timeless and transformative.
